What have your feelings got to do with the success of your business?

As it turns out, a lot. All businesses pass through a natural business lifecycle. The journey is not based on revenue, profit or staff numbers but rather the feelings the business experiences.

All businesses, from sole proprietors to corporate boards, are run by people, and people are impacted by their feelings. Especially in small business, the feelings of the owner have an impact on daily communication and decision-making.

A good resolution isn't just about setting a goal, it's about setting the right goal.

Janeen Savini, who calls herself The Jumpstart Coach offers advice about setting and achieving good personal goals.

"First of all you have to do some thinking before you set your goals," Savini, a certified life and wellness coach, said. "When you call something a goal or you resolve to do it, you make a commitment. The idea behind goals is you have to have this long term vision and that has to line up with your values and responsibilities. "

It's easy to make a grandiose New Year's resolution - but much less easy to stick to it.

Life coach and personal trainer Jennifer Atkins said to make the right resolution you needed to have a clear purpose."What do you really want?" she said.

"Too many times we align our goals with what others want and then wonder why we lose the motivation to achieve them."For a dream to become a goal, it needed to be specific.

December 28, 2010 - Kansas City Star - Kansas City, MO, US

At a recent holiday party, an enraged manager told me about an end-of-year performance review with an employee. The staffer complained about his delayed promotion and ticked off a list of gripes about the way his department was run.

"He had some valid complaints," the manager told me. "But he didn't have a single solution. He didn't position himself as someone I'd want to promote."

That's a lesson worth noting for workers, who will likely have the opportunity in the next few weeks to nab some one-on-one time with their supervisors in end-of-year performance reviews and beginning-of-year strategy sessions. For employees frustrated by their slowed ascent and exhausted from picking up the duties from vacant positions, this is the opportunity to create change for 2011.

What do you need to let go of or complete before the year is over? What do you want for yourself in 2011, and how will you make that happen? How will you stay inspired and focused next year?
December 28, 2010 - Providence Journal - Providence, RI, US

A lot of folks look to the New Year as a time to change undesirable behaviors. And yet many of us feel disappointed, frustrated and even angry at ourselves when sometime in February we realize we have reverted to doing just what we resolved not to do. On top of that, we often blame ourselves for lacking willpower or being too undisciplined to follow through on our healthier goals.

But what if it’s not about strengthening our willpower, but rather about deepening our awareness?

I used to struggle with the “bad” habit of getting on the computer in the evening, and then staying up too late surfing the Net or playing on Facebook. I’d be wound up way past my bedtime and then found it really difficult to fall into a restful sleep. There was no doubt in my mind that, for me, being online at night was not helpful or healthy behavior. So I set limits for myself and tried to willpower my way out of this habit.
