Actualizations is about a self-improvement workshop co-founded by Stewart Emery and Carol Augustus with the purpose of helping people establish joyful relationships in their lives. Published in 1977, this book begins by stating that our belief that the experience of being human is separation (which is an illusion) is our problem – what we have in reality is relatedness. Maslow’s model of self-actualization is foundational for this book, which looks at relationships with others and the relationship with self.

Stewart Emery, an Australian who emigrated to the United States to work with Werner Erhard as a trainer for Alexander Everett’s Mind Dynamics, is currently working as a consultant and life coach in the San Francisco area of California. One of the co-authors of Success Built to Last, he continues to blaze new ground in the field of human potential.

Who has been influenced by either or both Actualizations and Stewart Emery?

  • About the Author

Dr. Vikki Brock, MCC, is Team Lead for the one-of-a-kind Virtual Museum of Coaching here at The Coaching Commons. Based on interviews about the evolution of coaching with over 175 coaching 'influencers' she also contributes mightily to our Coaching Hall of Fame. Though some may consider 'The History of Coaching' a dry topic, Vikki believes 'the roots determine the fruits' and promises the museum won't be a stuffy place. Vikki is also the only executive and leadership coach we know who supports clients from a 50 foot sailboat named Cuidado, moored in Ventura, California next to the Channel Islands National Park.
