Peter Senge (born 1947), a student of Argyris and Shon, writes about the importance of systems thinking (the fifth discipline) in organizations and about the learning disabilities that exist in organizations. Back in the 1970s, according to Jim Selman, he, Senge and Werner Erhard were pals – with Peter’s firm being highly successful in popularizing some of the transformational ideas of Erhard.
Senge emerged in the 1990s as a major figure in organizational development with his book The Fifth Discipline where he developed the notion of a learning organization – a dynamic system in a state of continuous adaptation and improvement. He has had a great impact on how business is done today.
Senge’s influence on coaching is well-known. Meryl Moritz described Senge’s work as looking at how a system itself can change and learn from what it has done, which is similar to what coaching does with individuals. In fact, Senge has been a keynote for the global International Coach Federation conference.
