Zig Zigler (1926- ) began as a sales trainer and went into motivational speaking full time in the 1970s. According to coach Catrina Rando, “everyone equates Zig Zigler as a motivational speaker, which of course he’s an outstanding motivational speaker, but the point is he came in as a sales trainer”.

You might ask how this has influenced the coaching field. His influence came from his commitment to performance enhancement – more successful companies are built by beginning with people and building performance from the inside out. This sounds like coaching to me. One of his quotes – What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals – speaks to the whole person approach of coaching and the philosophy of hard work, common sense, fairness, commitment and integrity.

Where and how has Zigler touched your life?

About the Author

Dr. Vikki Brock, MCC, is Team Lead for the one-of-a-kind Virtual Museum of Coaching here at The Coaching Commons. Based on interviews about the evolution of coaching with over 175 coaching 'influencers' she also contributes mightily to our Coaching Hall of Fame. Though some may consider 'The History of Coaching' a dry topic, Vikki believes 'the roots determine the fruits' and promises the museum won't be a stuffy place. Vikki is also the only executive and leadership coach we know who supports clients from a 50 foot sailboat named Cuidado, moored in Ventura, California next to the Channel Islands National Park.
