Written by the late Dennis Kinlaw, The ASTD Trainer’s Sourcebook COACHING – Create Your Own Training Program, includes customizable training designs and fully reproducible workshop materials. This book was published as part of an open-ended series where all materials are open-source, and can be reproduced or modified without constraint.
The purpose of coach training is to remove the element of chance from coaching conversations. The Superior Coaching Model described in this manual contains the elements of: key values, essential characteristics, critical skills, core conversation, and performance applications.
Key values include beliefs about human competency, superior performance and values of coaching, while essential characteristics include the qualities of balance, being concrete, shared responsibility, shape, and respect. There is nothing new to coaches about these values and characteristics, nor is there in the critical skills of attending (listening), inquiring (questioning), reflecting, affirming, and being disciplined (skill of using the other four skills).
From this foundation, training designs for half-day through three-day workshops are presented. This is one of, if not the first, training manual to be published addressing coaching.
Who is familiar with this manual and how has it impacted you as a coach?
