Written by David Peterson and Mary Dee Hicks, Leader as Coach – Strategies for Coaching and Developing Others states clearly that coaching and development are not optional, in fact they are a competitive edge. This book is for leaders who want to lead their people and organization to greater productivity and success.
Peterson and Hicks identify five high-impact strategies for effective coaching:
- Forge a Partnership – through building trust and understanding so people want to work with you
- Inspire Commitment – through building insight and motivation so people focus their energy on goals that matter
- Grow Skills – through building new competencies to ensure people know how to do what is required
- Promote Persistence – through building stamina and discipline to make sure learning lasts on the job
- Shape the Environment – through building organizational support to reward learning and remove barriers
As I read through these I realized that these are also strategies for effective leadership. Three development tips are repeated throughout the book for leaders who are committed to developing their coaching skills: Set the standard, set new direction, and set free.
How has this book influenced you as a coach?
