3 Minute Video: Andrea J. Lee and the Works of Thomas Leonard

by

feature photo

Thomas Leonard remains revered in the world of coaching, and his book, “The Portable Coach,” tops most lists of best books on the subject. Leonard’s sudden death in 2003 shocked his friends and fellow coaches, and left a tremendous amount of work unfinished.

Andrea J. Lee, who worked closely with Leonard and retains the license to his body of work, is in the process of organizing Leonard’s “mountain” of personal papers, writings and recordings. Some of the material has been issued in a series of books and audio CDs, with more to come.

That effort continues to be an intensely emotional labor of love, as Andrea J. Lee explained to CoachReporter Mark Joyella.

NOTE: Our 3-minute video runs a little over 4 minutes this week!

Thank you Andrea, for your plans to share the work of Thomas Leonard with those who knew him and to introduce him to those who did not. There is much inspiration and wisdom to be gained from Thomas’s legacy.

Thomas Leonard inspired me to add coaching to my business consulting practice. I have many times referred back and listen to his recordings. He truly was ahead of his time.

I am so pleased that this is being put together. I had the priviledge of meeting Thomas and having many conversations with him. I loved his naturalness and ease with the way he interacted with questions. He just seemed to float a bit for me! Good luck Andrea with this project. Thomas would have been proud of you Andrea (together with Dave) of continuing his work.

Hi Andrea
You are doing a great job and I delight in seeing the fact that it’s still (despite the colossus/mountain range) a labour of love and of persistent goosebumps!
Tolerations is such a powerful concept for even early coaching clients. Is there some way to deliver that to us? Or is it already tucked into something else?

Andrea,

I’m so glad the 15 Proficiencies have been released and I’m curious about the beginning and advanced proficiencies. I know Thomas was working on them but not sure if they were finished.

I see a need nowadays for a set of standards for coaching that’s done not by professional coaches, but by all the others who are and will be using coaching skills and attitudes, such as managers, teachers, parents, peers coaching each other etc. Maybe the beginning proficiencies could help us clarify that?

And for the advanced proficiencies, I’d love to tap into Thomas’s vision for us. What do the most masterful coaches do, those few who use the least effort and get the greatest results? I’m sure he had some inklings that would help us.

Great stuff Andrea, as a coach with so much “new material” and “new ways” to coach I find Thomas Leonards work a touch stone and such a solid foundation to base my coaching practice from…Don

Andrea – Fabulous tweak on talking head – love the TJL content. Even though I came to coaching after Thomas had died I LOVE and value him and literally eat up everything you are putting out. I also love the sound of the NYC traffic in the background and must admit that I grew up in Peter Cooper -the twin project to Stuyvesent(sp)Town (bt. 20th and 23rd Streets) and spent some time trying to see which bench you were sitting on and deciding that the traffic was heading uptown on First. I am a grateful part of the coaching community and so happy to have found you and Thomas. By the way – no wrinkles. xxx

Thomas is alive!!!!

I’m part of the new generation which unfortunately didn’t have the chance to know him when he was alive. I’m so exited he’s not gone and I can still learn from one of the persons I admire most.

Thanks Andrea from bringing T. back and thanks Mark for a great report. (as usual)!

Hi a,

You are a natural – love seeing you ‘in person’ and in NY!

As for Thomas Leonard’s material – I still have at least 20 legal pads of notes from his material. I can recall many classes I took where Thomas just went with the flow, and where I can literally still ‘hear’ his voice and intonation.

My vision – find people to teach his material in teleclasses – just the way we used to do it :-) When seasoned coaches bring his material to life, it takes on a richness and depth that reverberates in the world. It brings it to life in a way that written material just can’t do.

You have my vote!

I got into coaching because of exposures to Thomas’s works, and many of his materials via Coachville.

Many of the richness & depths of Thomas’s work, in my opinion, formed the bedrock for coaching.

However, some of his thoughts, in my opinion, may be ‘controversial’ or ‘ahead of his time’ and Andrea’s efforts will provide the avenues to further explore more profoundly his thoughts in the context of theoritical foundation to coaching practice.

Looking forward to the varied interpretations of Thomas’s work and his impact on the coaching profession.

Great work Andrea.

I grew up and live in Stuy Town and was so excited to see my favorite coach Andrea Lee talking about another favorite coach Thomas Leonard in Stuy Town. Small world!

Great project, Andrea! You are always up to amazing stuff, and appreciate all of your effort to keep Thomas’ gems alive and continuing to inspire not just ‘old timers’ (yikes do I now fit into that category?!) and newer coaches, alike. So much depth to his work, that even when I’ve heard something before, there’s new meaning and richness revealed with every listen/read.

As for ways to package, I know a lot of newer coaches have expressed to me the desire to have a ‘program’ to offer clients as they launching their coaching businesses.

Also it would be great to hear what his thoughts behind his questions are/were. Is there material of him sharing how/why he came up with presenting the questions that he did when demonstrating a coaching conversation? Many coaches have shared that they would love to understand how masterful coaches tap into their intuition/inklings.

Very cool work! Happy to help you with this project any way I can, Andrea.

Thank you Andrea for continuing this mammoth task. Thomas was so ahead of his time that even today his work will be considered by some as controversial and that of course is perfect!

With so many fans waiting anxiously for “anything Thomas”, could Thomas be the Elvis of coaching?
