Hail to that first exciting, awkward coaching session!

I, Mrs. Client, want to impress my new executive coach, and make certain that he/she knows that I am a vice-president and that I, of course, deserve this new assignment/project/promotion.

The coach must certainly think of me as a brilliant and credible candidate for her services…..oh, and also it’s important that I impress her as coachable…..an overachiever really, willing to learn…..a ready to exceed-her-expectations-kind-of-executive. Whew! Excuse me while I laugh out loud at my anxiety of that first session.

Quickly, the coach, with her calm and soothing voice, assures me. And, much to my surprise, I am quite comfortable.

That first session involves lots and lots of questions about me, my life, my work. I get a homework assignment…and…the beginning of a trusted relationship. I am embarking on a valuable growth journey and ALMOST willing to peek out from behind my ‘executive’ image.

So, from a client view, I’m just curious.

On the other side of the coin, how do you, the coach, feel at that first all-important session? Is there a certain ritual you use to assure comfort and trust with a new client?

Are you able to see through the client’s professional facade? And are you able to be your authentic self in that first session?
