Trying to get a new gig? You’re not alone. So how do you get a step ahead of the pack and make an impression when jobs are few and far between? Well, you can start by not trying to be too snarky.

“The worst thing I’ve ever heard in an interview was when a candidate said, ‘They just fired my ass,’ ” says Jason Seiden, author of ‘Super Staying Power: What You Need to Become Valuable & Resilient at Work.’ “Sometimes people try to be relatable and it winds up coming off as unprofessional.”

Seiden, who spent 10 years in executive coaching and management development, says there’s been a definite breakdown in formality, relevance of chronology, and the ability to write in many of today’s workforce candidates.
