Many people can relate to unrealized goals when attempting to get healthier. They try to eat better, exercise more or quit smoking only to experience a set-back and decide they just can’t do it.

Americans are inundated with information on healthy eating, weight loss diets or the latest exercise to get them in shape and help them lose weight. Even with all this information available, the United States has an adult population that is 66% overweight, with 33% being obese, according to the US Center for Disease Control. Obesity leads to higher incidents of diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, heart disease and certain cancers; 70% of which are preventable conditions. In fact, about 40% of premature deaths in the United States can be attributed to unhealthy lifestyle choices such as smoking, inactivity, poor eating habits, drugs, alcohol and accidents.

Wellness Coaching is an emerging methodology for lifestyle change that takes the advice we receive from health care providers and helps put those recommendations into action. The concept of coaching has been used for years. Most of us are familiar with coaching as it relates to sports and how it can help an athlete take their performance to the next level. Some people may have engaged in executive or business coaching to improve their job performance and develop their careers. From examples like these, behavioral scientists have shown that coaching is among the most effective approaches in helping people make improvements. This theory is now being applied to disease prevention and coaching can be used to make the healthy lifestyle changes that are required to achieve improved health and optimal wellness.
