In this tough economy, my wife and I, both freelance writers, have hustled for extra gigs and cut costs where we could: we moved to a house with cheaper rent, canceled cable TV, started visiting the public library more often, and even began making our own laundry detergent.
Our bottom line has improved (and our clothes are a little cleaner), but sometimes we question the viability of living in the Bay Area in the long term, especially as we think about raising our two-year-old daughter.
Will we ever be able to buy a home? Is the cost of living equal to the considerable pleasures of living here? Maybe, we think, we should move somewhere smaller, more affordable — like one of those picturesque places that show up on seductive Internet Top-10 lists.
I wondered if life coaching could help someone like me with the hard realities of money and career, or was it just a soothing New Age salve to distract a person from those very questions?
