July 17, 2009 – The Charlotte Post – Charlotte, NC, USA

From 1993 to 1994, Patricia Thomas says she encountered a life-changing experience. While working as a manager in a telecommunications firm, she hired an executive coach and was transformed.

‚ÄúThe person challenged certain beliefs that I had and opened my eyes to the possibility that there was more to be achieved and some of my assessments of things might have been actual limitations,” she recalls. ‚Äú[The experience] gave me the courage to take bigger steps, reach for bigger objectives and feel very confident in doing so. It opened up what was possible for me in the future and there was really nothing stopping me at that point. My goal ultimately was to become a coach so I could help others have the same type of experience.”

Now Thomas runs the Thomas Coaching Company Inc., an executive coaching and consulting firm that challenges clients to break through limiting beliefs, determine what success looks like for them, and take corrective measures to achieve their professional objectives and personal aspirations. She works with leaders, managers, and teams to help them enhance performance. Her firm boasts an impressive list of clients, including AT&T, Comcast, The New York Times Corporation, and Time, Inc.

Her story isn’t unique, either. Good executive coaching can be transformative on a personal and professional level. It can open the mind to some important new ideas and the “challenge” aspect of having a coach is ver powerful.

I like the story of Patricia Thomas whose experiences of being coached transformed her. I have wrestled with my internal dialogue on the following questions: “To what extent can the coach influence the transformation of a coachee, or is transformation the real work of the coachee himself/herself?”

Meta-cheerio.
