The Telegraph: Charisma Coaching–Learning to Be Like Barack Obama

July 20, 2009 – The Telegraph – London, UK

As the shadow of the credit crunch continues to loom over the economy, it can be hard to maintain one’s equanimity. Fed a daily diet of doom and gloom from the media, stressed about job security and plunging house prices, more and more of us are feeling the strain. Last month, a report from Mind warned that almost 40 per cent of men are struggling to cope with the emotional and psychological impact of the recession. In a survey of 2,000 adults, the charity found that concerns about job security, work and money were eating away at men’s mental wellbeing. An estimated 2.7 million men in England currently have a mental health problem such as depression, stress or anxiety.

I feel their pain. As a self-employed writer, my financial security has always been tenuous. And in these straitened times, simply paying the mortgage every month is a stress-inducing challenge. This has been taking its toll, sapping my confidence and joie de vivre. As the tide of red-topped bills threatened to engulf me, I decided enough was enough: my flagging confidence needed a boost.

Happily, I knew just the person for the job. Charisma coach Molly Watson works with an elite clientele ranging from Hollywood A-listers to the leading lights of business and politics. Although fiercely secretive about her client list, Molly admits to coaching corporate high-fliers from Sony, Bupa, Coutts and Merrill Lynch, honing their presentation and leadership skills. What makes Molly stand out from the crowd is her professed ability to make clients more charismatic.

From what I gathered from reading the story on ‘charismatic coaching’, it seems to point to ‘body language’ coaching (part of projection/attraction & listening skills), with plenty of feedbacks, raising of awareness and corrective work. Something which I may need to consistently be ‘coached-trained’ or ‘supervised’ so as to elevate my ‘moment of truths’ in coaching (now I can see the value of ‘coach supervision’ in this respect).

Although ‘charismatic coaching’ seems to be niche coaching, it sounds to me like ‘mainstream’, where it could be practised across all coaching domains. Where can we draw the line between ‘charismatic coaching’, and the core skills of projective/attraction & listening skills in coaching, so that clear distinctions can be made? Or is it just another branding term?

Good points on the manifestation of charismatic traits. Smiling, standing erect and making eye contact are typically how charismatic personalities express themselves. To delve into what makes a charismatic personality requires a bit deal more. For example, many charismatics like Michael Jordan and John F. Kennedy had early childhood challenges where they were counted out as being insignificant. It was the need to prove their value as well as overcome their insecurities that allowed their natural charisma to be developed. Other traits representative of charismatic personalities according to Jay Conger, a London Business School professor and USC researcher are:

· A restless compulsion to challenge the status quo. The charismatic personality is most at home, and most effective, in chaos.

· A clear vision within uncharted territory to explore

· An ability to articulate a vision compellingly to any audience and to imbue it with a sense of great importance.

¬∑ An ability to create a sense that no other person could–or would–take the same tactic.

· An ability to inspire and permit those around him to do extraordinary things.

It goes without saying that charisma isn’t easily produced, but its affectations can be emulated.
