Editor’s Note: Many coaches customize their services for a specific clientele. This week’s news explores a variety of coaching specialties. One contestant on the reality television show ‚Äö√Ñ√∫Big Brother‚Äö√Ñ√π has an unusual client base‚Äö√Ѭ∂ gangsters. Law.com takes a look at how lawyers, a group with many clients of their own, are increasingly hiring executive coaches to ready themselves for leadership roles. People lacking culinary skills can ‚Äö√Ñ√∫hire‚Äö√Ñ√π a coaching video game that helps improve their cooking and better organize their kitchen time and space. And the overarching theme comes from an executive coach who suggests that the best leaders are those who don’t lose sight of their clients. This week – it’s about concentrating on the client.

The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, designed to show where and how coaching appears in the popular culture worldwide. It is not intended to be a summary service nor a news roundup, although it may serve that purpose for some readers. The Chronicle is new each Thursday morning. A more personalized solution would be to hire an executive coach who can help you to analyze and overcome your professional challenges. Good executive coaches are hard to find and their value is largely determined by your willingness to engage in the coaching process openly and earnestly. If the conditions are right, however, such relationships can yield astonishing results.

Henry asked if there were any other ways to integrate coaching into his life at a price he could afford. He was convinced that if he just moved off center, he’d be on his way; he just needed a little push. I suggested some do-it-yourself solutions but he seemed pessimistic, explaining that each time he had tried, he had failed. I then suggested group coaching. There are many benefits to working within a group, including lowering the cost and gaining support from other participants. This appealed to him and he joined a coaching group.

Kinlee seemed nervous as she arrived for our first coaching session. It can be intimidating to meet someone for the first time and talk about issues that are very personal … and yet, I witness how relieved clients are to be able to talk openly and begin to make changes in their lives during the coaching process. One of my favorite quotes is by Anais Nin, who said, ‚Äö√Ñ√∫And there came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.‚Äö√Ñ√π When people call for life coaching, I know they are at that point.

As a certified Life Coach, my clients contact me for various reasons. I have a habit of zeroing in on truth and hate the slightest taste of even a mixture or what some like to call ‘white lies’. So when my clients hire me to discern, divide and dissect a situation, I may take hours to research, uncover and present all sides, fairly, so that success in personal as well as career is something they can expect to receive.

“One of the phrases we teach in our program is that I’d rather be unlovable than invisible and if I have to be unlovable to be visible, I will be,” says Life Coach, Mary Kay Mueller. Mueller believes Robert Hawkins desperately needed attention. While she never met him, she’s very much a part of Foster’s life. A year ago, he started her program “8 to Great”. Eight steps to get you thinking positive. Instead of the streets, Foster now spends his evenings on the court. And he’s not her first success story. The program has actually gained national attention.

In Basketball, Goal-Tending is not a good thing! In life, tending to your Goals is not only a good thing, it’s essential to success‚Äö√Ѭ∂ I agree with the great orator, Yogi Berra, who once said‚Äö√Ѭ∂”If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”

My first topic would be on collaborative styling which is the essence of creative management. The words ‘coach’ and ‘coachee’ are slightly unfortunate in implying that the coach is a senior person who is there to dispense wisdom and advice.

The leaders I coach influence the behavior of others. Assuming that the culture of a business or organization is the behavior of the leader, the ethical behavior of the leader is critical—not only for those within her or his realm of influence, but indeed for all those peripherally connected to her or to his place of work. Therefore, the privilege of a coach working with a leader is potentially enormous and far-reaching.

January 10, 2009, By Marshall Goldsmith
I cannot make the successful people I work with change. I don’t try. Too many people think that a coach — especially an accomplished one — will solve their problems. That’s like thinking that you’ll get in shape by hiring the world’s best trainer and not by working out yourself.
Truly great leaders, like Mike, recognize how silly it is to think it’s about the coach. Long-term success is created by the 40,000 people doing the work — not just the one person who has the privilege of being at the top.
