Tuesday, July 28th
Time: 2:00 – 3:00pm Eastern Time

Guest: C.J. Hayden, MCC, CPCC
Host: The Coaching Commons
Topic: Finding the Goodness in Business

Imagine a world where business is a force for good. Perhaps more than you think, this is the world we live in right now. All around you, visionary entrepreneurs are launching enterprises that serve a triple bottom line — contributing to people and to the planet, not just to profit. The era of the conscious business has arrived. Are you a part of it?

Did you know…

* Estimates suggest the social entrepreneurship sector employs around 40 million people globally, with 200 million more as volunteers

* 72% of U.S. consumers consider the social responsibility of a business when deciding whether to buy its products and services

* Companies with the best social responsibility ratings consistently out perform others in their class by a ratio of 9 to 1

* Small businesses like yours give more to charity and donate more volunteer hours than their corporate counterparts

In this conversation, we’ll be discussing questions like these:

Is conscious business just a tiny corner of the liberal, progressive world, or is it a growing, worldwide movement?

Can a coach be socially responsible, give back to his/her community, protect the environment, and still earn a good living?

Do your clients care whether you’re socially responsible?

What about the social responsibility of your business clients?

Can they – small businesses and corporations alike – afford to be socially responsible?

Why should they bother? And why should you care if they are?

About C.J.:

You may know C.J. Hayden best from her book and coaching program Get Clients Now!, but C.J.’s private coaching clients are social entrepreneurs, activists, and community leaders. Since 1992, she’s been helping conscious citizens build business ventures to effect social change.

C.J. is the author of three books and over 300 articles on marketing, entrepreneurship, and social action. She has published and taught in more places than she can keep track of, including Choice, Principled Profit, John F. Kennedy University, Mills College, and The Coaches Training Institute. C.J. was a founding director of the first international nonprofit association for coaches, which later merged with the ICF. She currently serves on the leadership teams of the Send Girls to School Project, Social Enterprise Alliance San Francisco chapter, and Global Initiative to Advance Entrepreneurship.

Editor’s Note: The rollercoaster global economy means the job market is more competitive. This week’s Chronicle offers a wide variety of coaching counsel addressing leading stressors in the workplace. For the first time, Britain is offering coaching to citizens living in public housing or claiming government benefits in order to help boost their confidence and motivation to find a job. In Ireland, job coaches are offering individuals practical assistance seeking employment and emotional assistance coping with a job loss. One London career coach advises carefully crafting a network of friends, colleagues and family members to increase progress in the job search. Another coach from the US suggests that accepting a pay cut may be the best and only choice for now. So is there a bright note this week? Certainly – Life coaches say add optimism and creativity: organize a to-do list with color or poetry, make a list of 100 (yes 100) things to be grateful for, and take a walk and breathe with nature, enjoying what the Japanese call ‚Äúforest bathing.”

The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, designed to show where and how coaching appears in the popular culture worldwide. It is not intended to be a summary service nor a news roundup, although it may serve that purpose for some readers. The Chronicle is new each Thursday morning. Compiled and edited by Alex Goldsmith and Linda Ballew.

A new industry is springing up on the back of the thousands of people who have lost their jobs due to the recession. Courses advising people how to find work, how to cope with unemployment, and to how to keep their sanity while on the dole are proving very popular. Two such ‚Äújob coaches”, Clodagh Hughes and Nial O’Reilly, are offering free coaching to unemployed people as their contribution to get the country get back on its feet.

Thus, it is to support the region’s beleaguered business community that Mr Criddle has launched a kind of executive support package. The Metier passport scheme is a combination of career coaching, psychological support and networking opportunities. At ¬£3,000- ¬£4,000 a year it is not aimed at those on their uppers, but at top-level executives affected by the recession.

Sharon’s journey to becoming an ‚Äúexecutive coach” began at a local church where everyone ‚Äúwould line up outside my door to ask my advice on team development, strategic planning, and how to develop their ministry and staff. At the risk of sounding self-serving, sometimes executives like the ones you describe need someone from the outside to tell them what to do differently. In this case, I’d advise bringing in someone who can provide both strategic consulting and executive coaching: the strategic consulting to help these two understand what they need to do differently from an operational perspective, the executive coaching so that they understand how they need to behave differently to lead a larger organization.

It is very easy to advise people. All you need to do is look at his or her situation and come up with suggestions on how you think he or she will be able to improve it. But this is not the essence of coaching; coaching requires a relationship between the coach and the client wherein both are in the same place and move towards the same goal together.

Topic: Helping Your Clients Find Their Transferable Skills

The concept of transferable skills is important for job seekers in today’s economy. In your resume, cover letter, and during the interview process, you need to prove that you have the experience, knowledge, passion, and drive to get the job done.

How you explain to potential employers what you’ve done up to this point, depends on what you want to do next.

If you have been doing the same job for years, and plan to stay in a similar position, or identical industry, your present skills are what you showcase to employers. If you are looking to switch industries or take a different position than the one you have now, you will have to show potential employers why you are the best candidate and the best match for the position.

Transferable skills are the skills you have acquired up to this point in your life that can help you do something else in your career. This means your entire life, not just what you have been paid to do.

Join Deborah Brown-Volkman, PCC, veteran career coach and author of 6 best-selling career and business books as she shares her secrets on how she helps her clients find and showcase their transferrable skills so they can find a job in today’s tough economy and job market.

Note: this is a Q&A call. Deborah prefers to find out what’s on your mind and directs the call based on what’s important to you. So, brings lots of questions!

Topic: What is the Perfect Question?

In his recent Coaching Commons article, Les Question Dangereux (Dangerous Questions): “Do I Want What I Want?” Lable refers to the brilliant musical “Camelot,” where the three main characters, King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, and Sir Lancelot suffer the tragic consequences of desperately wanting what they do not really want.

Wanting what they did not really want was the root of these characters’ tragedy. Wanting what we do not really want is the root of all tragedy.

The wish that is granted with disastrous results is a common motif in the traditional stories of humankind. (For a whimsical take on this motif, you might enjoy my story “The Post-Modern Genie.” The Universe is an immense, benevolent Genie. When we ask for something with all our mind, all our heart, all our focus, the Universe will see to it that we get what we wish for. That is why it is crucial that we wish for only what we truly want.

Coaching is the most powerful instrument available today for creating wishes, intention, and focus. The Coach guides the Client in formulating the Quest-ions that will form the template for the Universe’s response to the Client’s wishes. That is an immense, and dangerous, responsibility. Wrong questions will result in the client wanting what they do not really want. Wrong questions can result in tragedy.

In my book, “In Case of Emergency, Ask Questions,” I go back two millennia to find the sources of “The Perfect Question,” the one question that must form the root for any question tree that will result in wanting what we really want. This Perfect Question is an indispensable tool for Coaches as we help our Clients navigate the dangerous terrain of their lives.

Please join Lable for a rich Uncommon Conversation on “The Perfect Question.”

About Lable:

Lable Braun currently pretends to be the Director of Organizational Development for Dialogic. In the past he has also pretended to be a business executive supporting large consulting services organizations. In the more distant past, he has pretended to be a certified Project Management Professional.

Lable is a story-teller, philosophical-mystic, and tarot-reader with a strong pragmatic streak that he has been unsuccessfully trying to deal with for five-and-a-half decades. He just cannot seem to rid himself of the delusion that the Universe ought to make sense.

Lable studied Psychology and Classical Literature at Brooklyn College and has prized his front-row seat to the Human Comedy ever since. He resides in New Jersey with his wonderful wife Virginia and is very proud of the human-beings that his grown daughters Pesi and Leyot have become.

As always, if you can’t attend live, post your thoughts/questions below.

Editor’s Note: Ahhh, spring is in the air in the northern hemisphere. And with spring comes the yearly ritual of spring cleaning. This week’s Chronicle offers help tidying up both professional and personal lives. A former stripper, now life coach, cleaned up her own career and is advising others on ‚Äúwhipping” their career into shape. Looking to clean up the world? One coaching firm has advice for those interested in getting into the green jobs market. In the face of tough economic times, an executive coach recommends polishing your resume right now, while another coach has advice on how people losing their jobs can ‚Äòclean up’ on a severance package. This week, coaches are motivating clients to spring to action with a fresh perspective on their lives.

Coaching is flourishing. There’s no doubt that coaching has hit the mainstream. These days you’re hard pressed to find an organisation big, medium or small that’s not using coaching in some form or other, it’s the constant topic of articles in all the business magazines and websites everyone from consultants to plumbers are adding ‘…and coach’ to their taglines ‚Ķ even Dilbert is mocking it. And this is not such a bad thing.
March 27, 2009, Business Week – USA
Each of us brings our whole self to work each day, regardless of whether we have a chance to express and actualize ourselves in our jobs. As an executive coach, one of my most important roles is to help my clients understand what they are bringing to work each day. I often find that people use language to describe bosses or co-workers that sounds as if they are describing parents or siblings.

Mentoring programs usually start off with a bang and then fizzle, leaving younger lawyers dazed and confused, and at least a bit cynical. What does work, however, is to integrate good mentoring and coaching skills into the way your firm is managed.

And if you’re an entrepreneur in an economy on the brink, your perspective could be getting a little loopy. Actually, it’s called cognitive distortion, says Edward Trieber, a clinical psychologist, an attorney and the managing director of Harris, Rothenberg International LLC, which provides integrated solutions, executive coaching, web development and more. Cognitive distortion can cause people under undue stress to discount positive events, seeing only the negative.

Some of these rituals may be of interest to our readers. Upon arising in the morning, it is especially important to greet the day openly and consciously. Gratitude for the gift of a new day accompanied by a verbal expression of optimistic expectations for the events of that new day set the stage for a bright beginning each morning. Morning stretching or hand massage is a pleasant way to greet a new day.

Psychologist Elizabeth Loyd kept a sign in her office that summarized her approach to therapy. It said: ‚ÄúNo whining.” Of course, she was a caring listener. And her manner was always warm and supportive, said her husband of 41 years, Jerry A. Loyd of Cumming. But at a certain point, she’d tell her clients, ‚ÄúWe’re not here to listen to your story over and over. We’re here to do something,” he said.

Most external coaches don’t get the opportunity to see how their clients perform in their job or interact with their colleagues. You may get a third-party opinion by way of a briefing from a sponsor or manager but, other than that, your only information is what the client chooses to tell you. So, what do you do when you think your client is failing to tell you the truth or perhaps even lying to you?

I have strong views on this – your lead generation cost must include an assessment of your time to help you to look across the different ways of attracting prospective customers and making an objective assessment.
Wednesday April 8th

Time: 12 noon – 1pm Eastern Time

Guest: Michael Bungay Stanier
Host: The Coaching Commons

Topic: Three Ways to Help You & Your Clients Find Their Great Work!

Coaching has many definitions. One might be: Helping people do more Great Work and less Good Work.

In this practical, interactive and fun teleclass, we’ll cover three exercises you can use immediately with your clients (and on yourself) to help you do more Great Work.

This teleclass is based on Michael Bungay Stanier’s latest book, “Find Your Great Work.” FYGW has been endorsed by such coaching heavy-weights as Marshall Goldsmith, Andrea Lee, Marcia Wieder and seven Past Presidents of the ICF.

David Allen, author of Getting Things Done says: “If I had to pick a person to have dinner with, when I need to be prodded and challenged and inspired to think about the things I really am committed to think about for myself and what I’m doing, I’d pick Michael Bungay Stanier. He has an ability to shake our tree and make us more conscious and responsible about what we know but aren’t willing to admit we know yet. And the best part – he makes it easy and fun.”

More about our Guest:

Michael Bungay Stanier is the founder and Senior Partner of Box of Crayons, a company that helps organizations do less Good Work and more Great Work. He is Australian. And Canadian. And British. And has lived and worked in all of these countries, as well as in the United States.

He has spoken at numerous coach conferences, including three ICF Conferences. He has created three viral movies, including The Eight Irresistible Principles of Fun, which have been seen by millions of people around the world. He was a Rhodes Scholar and the 2006 Canadian Coach of the Year.

Michael can be found here:

Topic: Expressive Arts Coaching with Organizations

What is Expressive Arts Coaching?

How can it be used with organizations?

Why is this work important at this point in the evolution of our planet?

In the course of working for 20 years as an art therapist, Life Coach Tamara Herl realized what a powerful tool Expressive Arts can be in helping individuals awaken. Several years ago she felt called to bring this same awakening process into organizations–both to broaden the impact of her work, and to expedite a shift in organizational consciousness.

During our conversation, Tamara will lead participants through an expressive arts coaching experience and initiate a dialogue about how expressive arts coaching can impact the well being of organizations.

Tamara Herl is a Life Coach who helps clients search within themselves to find answers to their life and career challenges. With a gentle manner and deep wisdom, Tamara facilitates individual coaching, group coaching, and experiential retreats that help people and organizations expand their consciousness by connecting with their creativity.

Topic: How Corporations Source and Screen Executive Coaches:
War stories from the trenches

Link to Brian’s slides: www.coach-source.com/Uncommon3.ppt

Brian Underhill has spent 12 years screening executive coaches worldwide and has the scars to prove it! Hear the “behind the scenes” stories in building a pool of over 700 coaches in 37 countries to serve multi-national corporations’ executive coaching requests.

The executive coaching industry has come of age and generated even more questions. In Brian’s first two sessions, he explored this with the following questions:

How do organizations and coaches make the most of this powerful method?

What is the purpose of coaching?

Who should get coaching?

How can you tell coaches apart?

What is the impact of coaching?

How do coaches, leaders, organizations and the C-level leadership assess the impact of coaching?

Next big questions:

How do corporations find and screen coaches?

How are results measured?

How do you and your clients quantify and qualify your coaching results?

Please join us at the Coaching Commons for a robust, interactive discussion with Brian Underhill, author of Executive Coaching for Results: The Definitive Guide to Developing Organizational Leaders (Berrett-Koehler 2007).

Editor’s Note: Breakthroughs, large and small, have allowed us to advance as human beings. This week’s Chronicle theme is finding the single breakthrough that leads to personal progress. One ‚ÄòSupergirl’ had a major breakthrough when she realized the price of being ‚Äòperfect’, a cost women across the United States are paying. A Miami firm helps women recover from a life of poverty. One UK life coach helps a whole town deal with a fitness problem, while another coach thinks that viewing life as a movie can help give a client new perspective and direction. This week, identify barriers and find a way to break through!

One of the characteristics that sets great coaches apart from their more average colleagues is an attitude of open-mindedness, curiosity and a willingness for self-examination. And one the quickest places to discover more about you, your attitudes and your hidden strategies is to look at the kind of clients you tend to attract.

The problem with a downturn is that leaders can have a tendency to wade through difficult times alone, while their peers and direct reports keep quiet for fear of losing their jobs. Hence the need for coaching arises, with its promise of creating communicative and cohesive teams.

A coach says, ‘What do you think is wrong in your department? What do you think you could do more effectively?’” “It’s hard to define executive coaching,”…

February 4, 2009, BusinessZone.co.uk – Bristol, UK
Challenging times bring uncertainty into our lives. We all have to manage our reaction to this and this means moving beyond our fears. Successful organizations will be the ones that have authentic leaders setting the right example for those around them.
