Caryl Lucas has been a news reporter and worked with designers and celebrities as a fashion commentator. But she discovered her life’s mission helping at-risk girls find new direction through workshops and coaching.

The author, coach and motivational speaker works with girls as young as 12, in schools, churches and correctional facilities to help them “break out of stereotypes, recognize personal goals, and make choices to build their futures.” Most of the girls are from single-parent homes in urban or suburban New Jersey communities.

Lucas’ message? “If you can believe it, you can be it – but you need an action plan.”

After almost a decade of working with groups, Lucas branched into one-to-one coaching about three years ago, following an encounter during a self-esteem workshop.

One of the young participants described seeing her father on a Newark street. The man walked by without acknowledging her. As the sobbing girl told her story, she threw her arms around Lucas and asked for help. “I realized then that I had to set up time for individual sessions, to help girls like this in dealing with their anger and coping with abandonment.”

Gilda Rogers, program director of the School-based Youth Services Program at Red Bank Regional High School in Little Silver, N.J., has brought Lucas into the school several times. Part of the message to the students is that each of their lives is of value. “They’re hearing something they haven’t heard, they’re encouraged in a way they haven’t been encouraged,” Rogers says.

“Caryl tries to make them look inward, asks them pointed questions about the future, about their dreams.”

Lucas provides reading lists, recommends classes, helps the girls develop time management skills, and gives assignments including journaling and practicing “articulating what they want and don’t want for their lives.”

Among the most important lessons, Lucas says, is, “It’s ok if something doesn’t work out. It’s not the end of the world. You have to make the effort to keep growing.”

Her media and fashion background impresses the girls and “goes a long way” in boosting Lucas’ credibility with them, Rogers says.

Leslie Morris, director of Community Relations for New Jersey Primary Care Associates in Hamilton, N.J., calls Lucas a friend and colleague as well as an inspiration. “I’ve learned a lot from Caryl,” she says. “She gets people to look at themselves and make changes in their lives.”

Morris has hired Lucas to work with middle and high school students, and plans to bring her into a correctional facility for teen girls. “Caryl is going to talk to them about changes they can make in their lives, in their thinking, to prepare them for life after prison.”

The girls Lucas works with “are struggling with issues and exhibiting behaviors, but they don’t know where the problems come from,” Morris says. “Caryl helps them connect the dots. She gets them to see they can make different choices for themselves and make something productive of their lives.”

Lucas is in the process of starting a teleconference program for small groups, which she’ll use to supplement the coaching. She’s also working with adult women more often. “Women are constantly reinventing themselves,” Lucas says. “They’re thrust into change throughout their lives.”

But regardless of their age, Lucas strives to help her clients build tools that will “turn setbacks into nutrients” that enrich their lives and lead to personal fulfillment.

Sex addiction affects the work life of an individual as those affected may sit up through the early hours on chat rooms and sex sites, or find other ways to fulfill their needs, an expert says.

Twenty-seven percent of sex addicts readily admitted that they have lost career opportunities, Michelle Zelli, London-based Life Coach for the Mind, Body & Spirit and certified hypnotherapist, says.

During sex, our bodies release a powerful cocktail of chemicals that make us feel good. But some people get addicted to these chemicals and should seek help, she adds.

Most addictions begin as a happy habit that get out of control - this extends to eating, shopping, exercise, work, drugs, alcohol and much more.

If somebody has such an addiction and has tried unsuccessfully to take control, it is time to seek help, Zelli says. Read story.

Coach Tamara Herl has clients who sometimes have deep wounds, and she’s the first to beware of shifting from coach into the role of therapist.

But it’s not always the depth of the wounds that determines whether coaching can make a difference, she believes. “If they’re able to move forward and if they’re ready and willing to take responsibility for their own lives,” than they’re ready for coaching.

The coaching happens, she says, when a person looks back at the experiences–good and bad–in their life, and ask, “Where do I go from here?”

Her mission, Herl says, is reigniting the client’s passion for the thing–or things–that once inspired them. “Helping them rekindle that passion for that dream they once had…or that thing they want for their lives…usually it’s still in there. It might be a teeny tiny spark, and with coaching I help them believe in it again.”

Herl’s own passion–and love for artistic expression and spirituality–has led her to become an advocate for social change through coaching–either in traditional coach and client relationships, or by people affected by those who’ve been coached. “People from all walks of life can benefit from completing the process,” Herl says. “Those who are self-employed can develop a spiritually-based work ethic. People who work for someone else can explore ways to synchronize their own bottom line with that of their employer. People in management positions can create a work environment that supports both employee well-being and the bottom line of the organization. I have a vision of a world transformed by people and organizations who know how to do this.”

Herl spoke with CoachReporter Mark Joyella about this, and about her upcoming book “Transcending the Bottom Line: Creating a Spiritual Work Ethic.”

I’m sure most of us have this niggling doubt now and then about how well our life is going and where we are headed. If you are not one among ‘us’, then congrats, you must be doing something great with your life. But for the rest of us who need a reality check, let us grab this new application from Emerald Life Coaching called LifeCheck and see if it’s any good at indicating the present status of our lives.

Life coaches seem to be the new trend in town for living a holistic life. But then not many people have the time, money or inclination to actually sit down with one and analyse our lives. For LifeCheck, all we need to spend are just five minutes, shell out $3.99 and have a little concern for ourselves. The application is developed by a life coach himself, so we need not worry that we are losing on the expertise of a certified professional. The interface is easy to use and presented well.

LifeCheck addresses six main areas of life, ranging from career to health to social happiness. There are two steps to the analysis; in the first step, we have to answer questions about how well we are doing in a certain sphere of life. The latter step asks us about how important these issues are to us.

Out of sight for years, Jayson Blair’s new line of work was revealed this week in an Associated Press report: Blair, now living in Northern Virginia, has become a certified life coach, working with clients at a psychological practice in Ashburn, Virginia.

Blair spoke with Mark Joyella from his new job, speaking frankly about the plagiarism scandal that ended his career as a journalist and crippled the careers of two top New York Times editors, and the time since.

Editor’s Note: Wave goodbye to the Chronicle of Coaching. The weekly compilation of global media-talk about coaching is getting a makeover. Sort of.

Three years ago, when the Chronicle first went live, there were only 10-15 coaching articles to be found each week. It was like detective work to find them. Now the Chronicle of Coaching is overflowing with TMI! (too much information) At least, too much to read in one sitting. So starting next week, we’ll offer coaching news, hot and fresh each day, under the headline, ‚ÄúThe Commons DeNewsinator.” You’ll find it front and center on our Coaching Commons homepage. So visit more often to read what’s new – Still BIG news, just smaller bytes.

The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, designed to show where and how coaching appears in the popular culture worldwide. It is not intended to be a summary service nor a news roundup, although it may serve that purpose for some readers. The Chronicle is new each Thursday morning. Compiled and edited by Alex Goldsmith and Linda Ballew.

Executive/Business Coaching

Your Office Coach: Focus on What’s Important
May 5, 2009, San Luis Obispo Tribune – San Luis Obispo, CA, USA
Although you’re putting a lot of energy into this battle, it’s not clear what the war is about. In fact, you might be the only person fighting. Since these co-workers seem to be doing you no harm, your resentment may simply reflect the inevitable frustrations of a mid-life career change.

Motivators, Coaches Weigh In On ‘Dirty’ CEO Label
May 2, 2009, International Business Times – New York, NY, USA
A group of three motivators, whose work includes executive coaching, business management consulting and formulating creative approaches for changing organizations, weighed in on a discussion topic asking if the negative perceptions some Americans have about chief executive officers as being greedy and incompetent is fair and when the CEO label can stop being a ‚Äúdirty word.”

Leadership’s Ripple Effect
May 2, 2009, Telegraph-Journal – Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada
Leadership is an important skill for managers, but a company with developed leaders across the workforce right down to the lowest level employees will have a ripple effect of benefits, executive coach Marilyn Singh says.

Someone to Watch Over Me
May 1, 2009, TrainingZone.co.uk – Bristol, UK
How many coaches have supervisors, and of those that do, are they truly benefiting from it? Alan Ward argues that supervision, done properly, is in the best interests of the coach and the coachee.

Five Steps for Effective Sales Coaching
May 1, 2009, BusinessWeek – USA
While the link between effective sales coaching and better sales performance is widely known, the majority of sales organizations fail to realize the full potential of their investments in sales coaching training. Often times, this means missed opportunities for dramatic improvements in top-line revenue growth, margin enhancement, conversion rates, as well as sales forecast accuracy, and sales rep retention and engagement levels.

Outplacement Becomes a Coveted Benefit in Hard Times
May 2009, Workforce Management – Irvine, CA, USA
Also as a result of the recession, career transition services for executives have begun to take a new form. Many employers that signed up for executive coaching and promised outplacement services for these employees (should that be necessary) now find themselves in a position where they don’t want to lay off executives, but they’ve eliminated the positions for which they were hired.

Your Office Coach: Adjusting to Different Management Styles
April 30, 2009, Grand Forks Herald – Grand Forks, ND, USA
Getting a new leader almost always means adjusting to a different management style. The key is to recognize “different” does not mean “wrong”. Your previous boss apparently liked spontaneous interaction, while this one prefers planned communication. Either approach can work, but the change is uncomfortable, especially if you are a more spontaneous person yourself.

May 5, 2009, Beliefnet.com – New York, NY, USA
If I were my own life coach, I would say: “Victoria, the hell with it. Seriously. Take care of yourself, take care of your family, and everything else can take a number.” And since I am my own life coach right now (I’m spending my money on book publicity), I’ve been taking my advice.

April 30, 2009, Huffington Post – New York, NY, USA
Everyone is welcomed to join in the practice, and many of us do. However, how many of us applied this random time marker to our own lives, and conducted a review and assessment of what we have been up to these past 100 days?

April 30, 2009, San Luis Obispo Tribune – San Luis Obispo, CA, USA
“Divorce shakes the whole foundation of your life and puts it on sand that blows in the wind,” said Joanie Winberg, author of “Rising to the Top: A Guide to Self Development.” Winberg became a single mom after a 20-year marriage. Her struggle to rebuild her life after divorce led her to become part of the newest coaching specialty – life planning after divorce.

May 5, 2009, Financial Times – London, England, UK
One of the most important issues for any organization’s human resources department is how best to manage maternity leave. In recent years, some companies have been turning to specialist maternity coaches to help ease the shift from high-flyer to mother and back again.

Across the country, so-called wealth coaching has never been more profitable than in the current economy because rich people have never been more frightened. “And the reason they’re more afraid is that more of them believe this time is different,” Gottfurcht said. “They believe this (recession) is more semi-permanent.”

Dr. Jones’ own status of a survivor of spiritual abuse in several church settings – plus her work as a psychologist, counselor, and life coach – give her a unique, pastoral care perspective on such topics. And so, I posed a series of five virtual interview ‚Äúcluster questions” on topics related to spiritual abuse.

If you are like many life coaches, one of your greatest fears is wasting time and money on a marketing strategy, and falling short of your coaching client goal. There is so much information; you might often not know where to start. This is coach training you can start using today to improve your results.

There is a shift in the balance of power that happens in a typical coaching, mentoring or managerial relationship. At first the coach may need to manage the client, having power ‚Äòover’. As the work progresses, the coach hands back power, sharing it with the client.

Editor’s Note: The rollercoaster global economy means the job market is more competitive. This week’s Chronicle offers a wide variety of coaching counsel addressing leading stressors in the workplace. For the first time, Britain is offering coaching to citizens living in public housing or claiming government benefits in order to help boost their confidence and motivation to find a job. In Ireland, job coaches are offering individuals practical assistance seeking employment and emotional assistance coping with a job loss. One London career coach advises carefully crafting a network of friends, colleagues and family members to increase progress in the job search. Another coach from the US suggests that accepting a pay cut may be the best and only choice for now. So is there a bright note this week? Certainly – Life coaches say add optimism and creativity: organize a to-do list with color or poetry, make a list of 100 (yes 100) things to be grateful for, and take a walk and breathe with nature, enjoying what the Japanese call ‚Äúforest bathing.”

It is not intended to be a summary service nor a news roundup, although it may serve that purpose for some readers. The Chronicle is new each Thursday morning. At the risk of sounding self-serving, sometimes executives like the ones you describe need someone from the outside to tell them what to do differently. In this case, I’d advise bringing in someone who can provide both strategic consulting and executive coaching: the strategic consulting to help these two understand what they need to do differently from an operational perspective, the executive coaching so that they understand how they need to behave differently to lead a larger organization.

It is very easy to advise people. All you need to do is look at his or her situation and come up with suggestions on how you think he or she will be able to improve it. But this is not the essence of coaching; coaching requires a relationship between the coach and the client wherein both are in the same place and move towards the same goal together.

Editor’s Note: As the economic challenges continue, job jitters create opportunities for coaches. Coaches are helping clients become indispensable to their employers, they’re helping lawyers and auto dealers find new business, or they’re championing clients who are rethinking their careers. Some people are deciding that now is the perfect time to become a coach, including supermodel Nandinii San, now offering soul coaching in Mumbai. Autistic adults in Delaware are getting specialized coaching to help them succeed at jobs that allow them to do something productive and satisfying. Health coaching helps children learn new diet and exercise habits. What’s the right thing to say to someone who’s fighting cancer? A communication coach told a television audience that a greeting card might not be the best way to send your message, and he got an earful from people who disagree. Finally, in the week we celebrate Earth Day, it seems appropriate to feature a coach whose specialty is green – a green thumb, that is.
