For the First Time, Asia Has a Coaching Conference of Its Own
By Mark Joyella

Curious how the world of coaching may change in just a few years’ time?

Many coaches are convinced whatever it looks like, its epicenter will almost certainly be in Asia—so they’ve gathered there for a first-of-its-kind event, the three day Asia Pacific Coaching Conference (APCC), which started September 1st.

“As somebody once said to me, ‘If you want styling in an automobile, you go to Italy. If you want engineering, you go to Germany. If you want marketing, you go to Japan.’ In coaching, there are these major differences, which then cause us to look at approaches to coaching differently,” said the conference’s founder, Foo See Luan, an executive coach based in Singapore.

Coaches from a dozen nations have gathered Singapore’s Furama Hotel. They’re there to take up topics rarely addressed in coaching conferences in other parts of the world, like “the Art, Science and Practice of Coaching in China,” and “Executive Coaching in Asian Cultures.”

An official event of the Asia Pacific Alliance of Coaches and the ICF’s Singapore Chapter, the APCC marks a major milestone for the region, where coaching is booming and coaches are hungry for exposure to the latest science and speakers. Read story.

From the Headlines: In Australia, One “Giant Leap” Closer to Coaching Regulation
By Mark Joyella

Like the reviewers’ raves in a movie advertisement, coaches backing Australia’s fast-moving drive to deliver a set of coaching standards spare no adjective in their praise.

“I can go as far as to say that the coaching industry in Australia will be leading the world when it comes to taking giant steps towards professionalism and regulation,” said Sally Parrish, director of the Australian & New Zealand Institute of Coaching and member of the working group developing the coaching guidelines.

For Noel Posus, an Australia/New Zealand Coach of the Year, the effort to answer key coaching questions such as “what does it mean to be a coach?” is nothing short of “the most important event in the history of coaching in Australia (and New Zealand…and possibly the world).” Read story.

Sabbatical Experiences In Demand
By Erin Flynn Jay

Despite the economic downturn, business has picked up for some life sabbatical coaches.

Many people are now placing an equally high or even higher value on life outside of work: personal and family relationships; hobbies and dreams; and community. “Perhaps more interesting than the ‘where’ is the ‘what’ people are doing on sabbaticals,” said career sabbatical coach Elizabeth Pagano.

People want their sabbatical experience to be transforming, and that result requires thoughtful and careful planning.

One of Pagano’s clients is combining a walking tour with a corporate poet in the lake district of England, with attendance at a global TED conference and two months of living in London. Another client is spending three months working on a rock musical in Toronto. Read story.

Research Update: Discovering, Applying and Integrating – The Process of Learning in Coaching
By Kerryn Griffiths

When reading research, it’s always good sense to read with the following (very intellectual) question in mind…

SO WHAT?

So what’s the SO WHAT of discovering, applying and integrating: The process of learning in coaching?

Coaching outcomes are in direct proportion to client learning. SO, to generate learning in coaching, you need to ensure that clients are:

1. Discovering
2. Applying
3. Integrating

Discovering happens when clients get an insight or gain some form of new knowledge.

Applying happens when they apply or use this new knowledge in their life or work. Read story.
